Sustainability

Sandefjord is committed to environmental sustainability, investing millions in maintaining a cleaner, greener city. The municipality is proudly certified under the Eco-Lighthouse standard, a distinction shared by nearly 250 local businesses. In fact, Sandefjord boasts the highest number of Eco-Lighthouse-certified companies per capita in Norway.

With a dedicated climate budget, the city aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. One key initiative is the installation of a 1,500 m² solar panel system at the town hall, projected to generate 207,000 kWh annually and reduce emissions by nearly 25 tonnes of CO₂. Additionally, the ongoing replacement of 350 streetlights per year with energy-efficient LEDs will contribute to an annual CO₂ reduction of 11.7 tonnes.

Sandefjord is also making significant investments in cycling infrastructure through its Cycling City initiative, with a goal of increasing the cycling share to 10% by 2025. The city continuously improves facilities for cyclists, pedestrians, and public transport users, promoting more sustainable modes of transport.

In addition, district heating systems have been established in several areas, dramatically reducing emissions. Powered by renewable resources like wood chips, pellets, and even horse manure, these systems offer a nearly greenhouse gas-neutral alternative to oil and gas.
